What it does
A plain investor does not need to find the next big winner. They need a list of companies that are large, strong, steady and not overpriced, and a way to cut a long list down fast. This workflow follows the seven tests in The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham. Five tests check the company: size, financial strength, a profit in each of ten years, a long unbroken dividend and a minimum of growth. Two check the price: no more than fifteen times three-year average earnings and no more than one and a half times book value, with a combined limit. Between them it checks the per-share earnings for traps, because the price tests are only as good as the earnings they use. Popular growth names usually fail on price, and that is on purpose. The result is a spread list of ten to thirty names, with rules for when you…
You give it
- Ten years of figures for each company, with profit and dividends per share
- The latest balance sheet and the share price
- Book value per share
- What safe bonds pay now, if you know it
You get
- A pass, fail or unknown on each quality test, with the figure
- Restated earnings, if one-off items or share counts were hiding in them
- A pass or fail on three price ceilings, with every sum shown
- A spread list, caps for any one name and industry, and a holding plan
Use it when
- You want a list of sound companies to hold for years with little fuss.
- Someone gave you a stock tip and you want to test it against plain rules.
- You have a long list and need a repeatable way to cut it.
Steps
- Defensive stock quality screener: Paste a company's ten-year figures. Get it passed or failed on size, strength, profit record, dividends and growth.
- Earnings quality checker: Paste a company's statements and one-off table. Get accounting choices that lift profit, their size, and a clean, adjusted or avoid call.
- Stock purchase price checker: Paste a company's earnings, book value and share price. Get a pass or fail on three price ceilings, with every sum shown.
- Defensive stock list builder: Paste the companies that passed your tests. Get a spread list of 10 to 30, size limits and a yearly review date.
- Sit-still rule writer: Paste your picks. Get one page of holding rules: what must stay true, review dates and the only reasons to act.
How to use it
- Download the handoff pack. It's a zip with HANDOFF.md and every skill file this workflow uses.
- Give the folder to Claude (in Claude Code, or as files in a Claude Project) and say "Follow HANDOFF.md".
- Paste the figures. Mark any year you cannot find, since a gap is marked unknown, not guessed.
- Read the cuts first. Most companies fail at least one test.
