What it does
Teams often hand AI whatever is easiest to automate. Then something goes wrong that nobody saw coming. The weekly report that was tedious was also how the manager spotted a problem. The email check was slow, but it was the only time anyone read the claims. The steps start with the people. First it splits the job into tasks and marks the ones that drain, tire or put people at risk. Then it asks of each task AI would take: what else does this do, who gains, and what breaks without it? Next it writes a card for each handoff so no fact is lost on the way. Last it works backward from what would make the plan fail and lists a change for each gap.
You give it
- The job, who does it and a typical week
- Which tasks people dislike or find tiring
- What AI tools you can use (optional)
- Anything the job must never get wrong (optional)
You get
- A task list with the ones AI takes, the ones it assists and the ones that stay with people
- For each task AI takes, what it quietly does and a call to cut, keep or replace it
- A card for each handoff with what the step needs, returns and must never lose
- A list of ways the plan could fail, with a change for each
Use it when
- You want AI to take work off a role, such as support, reporting or admin.
- You are about to automate a task and have a feeling it does more than it seems.
- You are setting up several AI steps and want to know where a fact could get lost.
Steps
- AI task opportunity review: Describe a job and who does it. Get the tasks that drain or endanger people and where AI can help.
- Hidden value check: Paste a job, step or rule you want to cut or automate. Get what it quietly does besides the obvious task.
- AI workflow instructions planner: List your AI workflow steps. Get clear instructions for passing facts and results between them.
- Failure-first plan check: Paste a plan. Get a list of the ways it could fail, and the changes that avoid them.
How to use it
- Download the handoff pack. It's a zip with HANDOFF.md and every skill file this workflow uses.
- Give the folder to Claude (in Claude Code, or as files in a Claude Project) and say "Follow HANDOFF.md".
- Describe the job and a normal week. Ask two or three of the people who do it which tasks they dislike.
- Read the hidden-value step before you automate anything. Keep or replace whatever it flags.
- Run one small task first, and check the failure list before you add more.
