Size a market and separate the facts from the guesses

Give it the market and your idea. Get a size estimate, the facts behind it and a report.

What it does

Market size numbers are mostly made up and passed on. A deck says the market is $12 billion, the source is another deck, and the number that matters, how many people would actually buy this, was never worked out. This workflow builds the number from the bottom and labels every part. It estimates the market from the people or businesses who have the problem, how many could buy, and what they would pay. It then looks for the public facts behind each input: census and trade data, filings, official statistics. It separates findings from guesses, in the manner of Newton and Darwin, who kept what they had observed apart from what they inferred. Then it writes the report with each number marked as a fact with its source or a guess with its reasoning, so a reader can argue with the right part.

Use it when

Steps

  1. Market size estimator: Give it a market or product idea. Get a TAM, SAM and SOM estimate built top-down and bottom-up, with sources.
  2. Public database fact finder: Name the fact you need and the database. Get it retrieved the same way every time, with source and date.
  3. Research evidence checker: Paste a report or analysis. Get every line sorted into proven, likely or guess, plus the open questions left over.
  4. Market research report writer: Name a market. Get a sourced report where every claim has a source, and sizing shows its assumptions.

How to use it

  1. Download the handoff pack. It's a zip with HANDOFF.md and every skill file this workflow uses.
  2. Give the folder to Claude (in Claude Code, or as files in a Claude Project) and say "Follow HANDOFF.md".
  3. Paste the market, who you would sell to and your price. It builds the estimate and looks for the facts.
  4. Read the findings and guesses split. Decide which guesses to go and test.
  5. Use the report, and update it when a guess becomes a finding.
