What it does
Profit in a field is shaped less by how good you are than by the structure around you. Easy entry, strong buyers, strong suppliers, easy substitutes and fierce rivalry each push profit down. If you only watch your direct rival you miss the force that is actually taking the margin. This skill checks each force with the questions that matter. For entrants it looks at scale, cost of a brand, access to distribution and rules. For suppliers and buyers it looks at number, switching cost and how alike the products are. For substitutes it asks what meets the same need better or cheaper. For rivalry it looks at count, growth and exit costs. It then calls out the one or two forces that decide the answer. The score shows how complete the read is.
