What it does
Readers distrust ads. They also need a reason to defend a purchase that started with a feeling. Proof does both jobs, and the more believable the facts, the better the ad tends to do. This skill looks for proof in four places: how the thing is made, what it has done for real users, what others say about it, and what the reader can test for themselves. It prefers facts that are specific and checkable, often stated modestly. It also says what to do with a claim that has no proof: cut it, shrink it, or add a test offer so the reader can find out.
You give it
- The ad brief or the list of claims you want to make
- Your product facts: materials, process, results, awards, guarantees
- Customer reviews, testimonials or test results, with source and date (optional)
- Customer words (optional)
You get
- Each claim paired with its strongest proof and the kind of proof it is
- The doubt a reader is likely to have about each claim
- Claims with no proof, each marked cut, shrink or test offer
- A note on where in the ad each proof should sit
Use it when
- You have the claims for an ad but do not know which ones you can back.
- Your ad is mostly adjectives and you want facts beside each claim.
- Readers say they do not believe the ad.
