What it does
Many products get a little better with more users, so the claim is easy to make. Few of them turn that into a lasting edge. A list of members, a busy forum or a large audience is not enough. The test is whether the extra users change what customers will pay, what it costs you to serve them, or how many leave. This skill asks the questions in order. Who is on each side? What does one more user add for the others? Does that gain flatten at a small number? Is the network local or global? Can users also be on a rival network at no cost? Most important, can you point to a number: higher price, lower cost or lower churn in the bigger group? If you cannot, the skill says so and names the cheapest way to find out.
You give it
- What the product does and who uses it
- Why you think more users make it better
- Any numbers that compare small groups with large ones (optional)
You get
- Who gains from each extra user, and how
- A check on whether the gain levels off at a small number
- A test of price, cost and churn between small and large groups
- A call of network power, useful feature or no network effect
- The cheapest next test, if the numbers are missing
Use it when
- You or a co-founder say you have a network effect and nobody has checked it against numbers.
- You are building community features and want to know if they will protect your margins.
- You are judging a rival's claim that its large audience makes it hard to beat.
How to use it
- Start a chat with the skill. Open it if you added it to your AI, or copy it and paste it in.
- Describe the product and the claim in your own words, for example what a new member gets from the 1,000th member.
- Paste any figures that compare small and large groups, such as retention by group size or prices by region.
- Read the call first. If it says no, read the cheapest next test.
- If the call is real network power, take it to "Seven powers scorecard builder".
