What it does
Most sales hiring runs on gut feel and a strong first impression. A person who did well at a big company with a well-known product may struggle at a small one that has to explain what it does. Without a written scorecard, every interviewer scores a different thing and nobody can learn what worked. This skill starts from your sale: who buys, how hard the product is to explain and how long a deal takes. It lists the traits you think predict success, defines each one and writes what a score of 1, 5 and 10 looks like. It chooses one test for each trait, such as a question, a role play, an exercise or a reference check. After you have hired, it compares the scorecards of your best and slowest hires, and shows which traits to raise, cut or add.
You give it
- What you sell, who buys and how long a sale takes
- How hard the product is to explain to a new buyer
- How your past hires turned out, with a few notes on each (optional)
- Traits you think matter (optional)
- Your lessons (optional)
You get
- A sale profile in plain words
- A list of traits with a definition and a 1, 5 and 10 anchor for each
- A test for each trait and a one-page scorecard
- A date and method to check the scorecard against real results
Use it when
- You are hiring your first salespeople and have no way to compare candidates.
- Your recent hires have done much worse than the interviews suggested.
- Each interviewer asks different questions and the team cannot agree on who to hire.
