What it does
The split between stocks and bonds drives most of what you will feel in a market fall. It is also the one decision you can make calmly, in advance, and write down. This skill follows a simple, old rule. Hold stocks between a quarter and three quarters of the invested money, with the other part in high-grade bonds. Start at half and half, since most people cannot say what the market will do. Move to the low end if you doubt the market level or could not stand a deep fall, and to the high end only if you are sure you could. When prices push the split five points off, sell a little of the one that grew and buy the other. It also checks what the bonds pay after tax and inflation. It names no fund or security.
