What it does
A likely winner is not a good bet once the price has counted its chance. Winners at the track bet rarely, and heavily, only when the odds are off. The same is true for money, time and effort. Most people spread thinly across many ideas, pay fees and tax for little, and sell the good ones in a bad month. This workflow does five things in order. It tests each bet for odds in your favour after the price, using a low, middle and high estimate. It ranks the ideas as if you only had twenty big choices for life, keeps one to three and writes a reason for every no. It checks who is paid to steer you. It tests whether the concentrated plan survives a bad year. Last, it writes the rules for holding: facts to watch, fixed review dates, the cost of acting and the only reasons…
You give it
- The bets you are weighing, with what goes in, what each pays and what you lose if it fails
- The price or odds for each one, if there are any
- Your range for how likely each is, and why you think so
- The pot, what must stay safe, your fees and tax rate (optional)
You get
- Each bet called near cinch, fair bet or no bet, from the payoff sum at three estimates
- One to three picks ranked and sized, with a written no for the rest
- Who is paid to steer you and where it pulls the wrong way
- Whether the plan survives a bad year, with a score and fixes
- A one-page rule set with facts to watch, review dates, the cost of acting and the only reasons to act
Use it when
- You have more ideas than you can back and no clear way to choose.
- You tend to spread thin, check often and change your mind with every move.
- Someone is selling you an idea with a big commission and a thick pack of paper.
Steps
- Mispriced bet tester: List your bets and prices. Get each called near cinch, fair bet or no bet, with the odds.
- Investment priority planner: List your bet ideas. Get the top one to three ranked and sized, and a written no for the rest.
- Incentive checker: Describe a team, plan or deal. Get who is rewarded for what, where it pulls the wrong way, and a fix.
- Room for error plan checker: Paste a budget or business plan. Get a survival score out of 100, where it breaks in a bad year, and fixes.
- Sit-still rule writer: Paste your picks. Get one page of holding rules: what must stay true, review dates and the only reasons to act.
