What it does
Most plans are built to show how well things go. Few are built to show whether you are still standing after a bad year. But in money, staying in the game matters more than the best case. A plan that wins nine years in ten and wipes you out in the tenth is not a good plan. This skill reads your plan and lists what must go right. It then assumes the plan fails and writes three believable ways it could, including a bad year and a forced sale. It finds the ruin point, the loss you could not carry on after, checks borrowing that can be called in at a bad time, and sizes a safety margin in cash, time or fixed costs. It marks where you can be bold over the long run and where you must be careful in the short run. It scores how well the…
You give it
- The plan: income, costs, debts and key assumptions
- Cash and savings you hold, and what you must pay each month
- Any borrowing and its terms, such as when it can be called in (optional)
- What a bad year looks like in your field (optional)
You get
- A list of what must go right for the plan to work
- Three believable ways it fails, each with a number or a date
- The ruin point and a score out of 100 for how well the plan survives
- Fixes sized to the worst case, and one rule against a panic move
Use it when
- You are about to commit to a budget, a loan, a lease or a hire based on a good-year forecast.
- Your plan works on paper but has no room if sales drop or costs rise.
- You want to know the one rule that stops you making a panic move in a bad month.
