What it does
When the other side can walk away and you cannot, most people do one of two things: cave early, or bluff and get caught. The weaker side wins fair terms by knowing the other side better than they know themselves, by having a clear floor, and by never letting the talk turn into a fight. This workflow prepares you in that order. It first writes the other side's view, only theirs: what they want, why they act as they do, what they fear losing. It then sets your terms and your walk-away for the weaker position, holding firm, as Nelson Mandela did, on the few things that matter. It plans the call with Chris Voss's tools: an opening, feeling labels, calibrated how and what questions, and a check that the deal is real. Last, it writes short calming lines for the points you expect them to dispute.
You give it
- The deal: what is on the table, what you need and what you can give
- Who you are talking to and what you know about them
- What happens to you if there is no deal
- Points you expect them to dispute (optional)
- Objection map (optional)
You get
- The other side's view, in their words: wants, reasons, fears
- Your terms, your walk-away point and the few things you will not give
- A call plan with an opening, labels, calibrated questions and a test that the deal is real
- Short calming lines for each point of dispute
Use it when
- A customer who is a third of your revenue wants to change the terms.
- You are renewing a lease, a supply contract or a platform fee and the other side knows you need it.
- You tend to agree too fast when someone pushes back.
Steps
- Other person's view mapper: Describe the person and the matter. Get their side only: what they want, why they act so and how they save face.
- Negotiation prep planner for the weaker side: Describe a talk where the other side holds more power. Get your terms, their needs and the order to move in.
- Negotiation call prep planner: Describe the deal and the other side. Get opening lines, questions to ask and what to listen for.
- Disagreement response writer: Paste the point you expect them to dispute. Get short lines for pushback that keep the person while you hold your view.
How to use it
- Download the handoff pack. It's a zip with HANDOFF.md and every skill file this workflow uses.
- Give the folder to Claude (in Claude Code, or as files in a Claude Project) and say "Follow HANDOFF.md".
- Paste the deal, who you face and what no deal costs you. It maps their view and sets your terms.
- Read the call plan aloud once. Change any line you would not say.
- Hold the talk. Bring back what they said if you want the next round planned.
