What it does
Stories about being trapped fall apart when the reader thinks of a way out that the character does not. "Why doesn't she just call someone?" ends the dread on page ten. This skill builds the closed world first. It maps the place, lists every exit and every tool within reach, and gives each exit a reason it is shut. A reason can be a lock, an injury, a promise, a storm or a fear. It then picks a handful of everyday objects and sounds, such as a kettle, a hallway board that creaks or a clock, so the reader has something to watch in every scene. It also writes down what the trapped person knows that the other person does not. That gap is where the first plan comes from.
You give it
- Who is stuck, who or what holds them, and the place, in a few sentences
- Any rules of your story that fix what can happen (optional)
You get
- The one place, drawn in words, with a short list of what is within reach
- Every way out, each with the reason it is shut and what would open it
- Five or six ordinary objects and sounds the reader will watch
- What the trapped person knows that the other does not
Use it when
- Your story keeps one person in one place, and early readers say "why doesn't she just leave?"
- You have the idea but not the room, and the setting feels like a stage set.
- You want the dread to come from small things, not from big events.
How to use it
- Start a chat with the skill. Open it if you added it to your AI, or copy it and paste it in.
- Describe who is trapped, who holds them and where, even if the idea is rough.
- Answer its questions about injuries, weather, phones and neighbours.
- Take the list of exits to your outline. Next, use "Volatile antagonist mood mapper".
