What it does
When you make something useful, you must choose: keep it to yourself, license it for a fee, or give it away. Each has costs. Giving it away can help a whole field, but leaves you with no income to keep working. Protecting it can fund the next piece of work, but slows everyone else down. This skill names what you made and who could use it. It lists who gains if you publish it fully and who gains if you protect it. It checks what further work would need money that only protecting it can bring in, and weighs the effect on your field or market. It then states the decision in one sentence and lists exactly what you will publish and what you will share on request.
You give it
- What you made and what it does
- Who could use it, and who might copy it
- What your next piece of work would cost and how you fund it
You get
- A table of who gains and who pays under each option
- The funding need, named and not skipped
- A one-sentence decision with its reason
- A list of what will be shared openly and what only on request
Use it when
- You have built a method, template, tool or dataset others could use.
- A partner or advisor is pushing you to lock something down, or to open it up.
- You need a clear page to share with your team before you decide.
