What it does
Debate has to end. When it does not, the default winner is whoever has the most stamina. A team that cannot disagree and then act together either argues forever or complies in silence and drags its feet. This skill writes the dissent down in one fair line per person. It tests whether the disagreement is about what will happen (a difference of view) or about what to aim for (a clash of aims). Differences of view are settled by asking people to gamble with you and commit. Clashes of aims need a decision from above, quickly. The note names the owner, the review date and the signal that would show the decision is wrong.
You give it
- The decision and the options
- Each person's view and reason, in a line or two
- Who owns the decision and any deadline
You get
- One honest line of dissent per person
- A sort of each dissent as view or aims
- Who decides, if the aims clash, and what to bring them
- The commit line each person says back
- A short note for the team
Use it when
- A decision has been argued in three meetings with no end.
- One person keeps reopening a call after it was made.
- You are the boss and you disagree with a call your team wants to make.
