What it does
Product lines grow by addition. Every launch adds a product and no review ever removes one. Soon the team spends most of its time on products that make a tenth of the money, and the two that matter get what is left. This workflow does the cutting with numbers and a clear order. It ranks the products by what they really earn and what they cost in attention, and cuts the line in the manner of Steve Jobs's 1997 cull at Apple. It reviews every programme the same way, keep or cut, as Jeff Bezos and Warren Buffett judge what to stop. It writes the give-up list: what you will no longer do, said plainly, following Al Ries and Jack Trout's rule that focus means sacrifice. Then it writes the disagree-and-commit note, in Bezos's manner, so people who argued against a cut can still commit to it.
