What it does
Feedback fails when it is vague, late or about the person. People hear "you are careless" as an attack and defend themselves. They hear nothing at all when the message is padded with kind words. In both cases the behaviour continues. This skill uses a two-part check. Do you show you care about the person, and do you say plainly what is wrong? It places your situation on that chart and tells you which of four boxes you are in. It then plans a talk that starts with one specific, sincere piece of praise, describes the behaviour and its effect in plain words, and is humble, helpful, immediate and in person. It leaves room for the other person to answer and sets a follow-up.
You give it
- The person, your relationship and how long the problem has gone on
- What you saw them do and the effect it had
- What you have already said, if anything
- A draft message (optional)
- A draft (optional)
You get
- Which box on the chart you are in now, and what to change
- One piece of specific praise to open with
- The behaviour and effect, in words to say
- Questions to ask and a follow-up date
