What it does
When a store adds a range, it has to decide: give it a new name, or put it under the name you already have? A new name costs a new ad budget, site and email list. An old name is cheaper, but each product you hang on it can make the name mean less, and a cheaper range under a premium name can wreck the premium. Brand architecture means how your names relate: one master brand, a parent with endorsed brands, or separate brands. This skill runs the tests from two well-known brand books. They include five rules for house name or own name, a shopping-list test and a bartender test. It starts by checking whether you need any of this. A store with one core product usually does not, and it will say so and stop.
You give it
- Your current brand and what it stands for, in your customers' words
- The new product or range, its price and the sales you expect
- Your stores, ranges and brands, with sales share, customer overlap and price tier for each
- The ad budget for each brand, and how each is sold
- Any plan to buy or launch more brands (optional)
- Brand brain (optional)
You get
- A call per range, either its own name, the store name with a descriptor, or the store name only
- A chosen structure with a simple diagram, and a naming rule for future products
- Answers to the five rules, the shopping-list test and the bartender test
- A note on how to keep your old brand's meaning clear, and what to keep, merge or stop using
Use it when
- You are adding a new range or product and need to choose between its own name and your store name.
- You run, or plan to run, more than one store or brand and want a clear structure.
- You are buying or launching another brand and need to decide how visible the parent name should be.
How to use it
- Start a chat with the skill. Open it if you added it to your AI, or copy it and paste it in.
- Paste your list of brands and ranges with sales share, price and ad budget. Add the new product if there is one.
- Say what each name stands for in your customers' words. Use review language if you have it.
- Read the stop-early check first. If it says you do not need a structure, you do not.
- Keep the naming rule and apply it to the next product without a new debate.
