What it does
A story idea often sounds good for one paragraph and then runs dry. The writer has a situation and a feeling but not a point. The middle sags, and the ending has nothing to land on. This skill tests the idea before you write. It states the premise in one plain sentence, then finds the controlling idea: the truth the story expresses, with a cause. It then finds the counter idea: the strongest argument against that truth, which the story must give real weight. It tests whether the two can grow through a full story, outlines the main turns from character choices, marks any recycled formula and gives a go, rework or drop verdict with reasons.
