What it does
A single runway number, cash divided by last month's spend, is nearly always wrong. It ignores hiring, the months when bills cluster, and the time it takes to raise money. By the time the number looks bad, the choices left are poor ones. The steps replace it with a range. First it builds a monthly model from your plan: revenue from customers won and kept, the cost of making and selling, team and fixed costs, and cash flow in a best, base and worst case. Next it reads that cash and your real bank history, separates trend from season, adjusts for hiring, and finds the likely month cash reaches zero as a range, with the window in which to raise. The last step asks the hard questions, such as what happens if a raise takes twice as long, sets the cash levels at which you cut or raise, and assembles…
You give it
- Your plan, with prices, how many customers you expect and how long they stay
- Your team plan and fixed costs
- Your bank balance and 12 or more months of real monthly cash (optional but much better)
- Planned hires, big purchases and any money already promised
You get
- A monthly model with revenue, costs and cash in three cases
- A cash-out month shown as a range, with the window to raise
- Unit economics and payback by group of customers
- Cash levels at which to cut or raise, set in advance
- A finance plan for your board
Use it when
- You are raising money in the next year and need to know when you must start.
- You are hiring and need to see what it does to the cash-out date.
- A board or investor asks for a finance pack and you have only a spreadsheet of guesses.
Steps
- Startup financial model builder: Give your numbers and plans. Get a 3 to 5 year model with revenue, costs, cash flow and scenarios.
- Startup runway forecaster: Give it your monthly cash data. Get a forecast of burn and the month cash runs out.
- Startup finance advisor: Give it your numbers. Get unit economics, runway, fundraising steps and a finance pack for the board.
How to use it
- Download the handoff pack. It's a zip with HANDOFF.md and every skill file this workflow uses.
- Give the folder to Claude (in Claude Code, or as files in a Claude Project) and say "Follow HANDOFF.md".
- Give your plan in plain words and your honest numbers. Say which are guesses.
- Add your real monthly bank history before step 2 if you have it.
- Treat the pack as a draft. Have your accountant or adviser review it before it goes to anyone outside.
