What it does
Most hard talks open with your case. The other person defends their position, you defend yours, and whoever wins the point loses the person. A no said early is also hard to take back, because people stand by what they just said. This workflow plans the talk from their side first. It works out what they want and the fair reason they act as they do. It plans an opening with no blame and room for the idea to become theirs. It builds a short ladder of questions that start where you already agree, and it writes calm lines for the moments the talk could turn. The order comes from Dale Carnegie's third part of How to Win Friends and Influence People, on winning people to your way of thinking.
You give it
- Who you must talk to, and how you know them
- What you want from them, and what you could give or change
- What has happened so far, with facts, dates or quotes
- Anything they have said that shows what they care about (optional)
You get
- Their wants, their reasons and how they can keep their pride, each marked known or guess
- A conversation plan with their likely doubts, a friendly opening and questions that let them talk
- A ladder of four to seven questions, each with an honest yes, ending at your request
- Short lines for a flat no, a doubt, anger or a charge that you are wrong
Use it when
- You must ask a boss, client or partner for something and expect resistance.
- You are heading into a dispute and want to keep the relationship.
- You keep winning arguments and losing the person.
Steps
- Other person's view mapper: Describe the person and the matter. Get their side only: what they want, why they act so and how they save face.
- Proposal discussion planner: Paste who you need to win over and what you want. Get a conversation plan that starts from what they want.
- Sales agreement question planner: Paste your request and plan. Get four to seven questions in order, each with an honest yes, ending at your ask.
- Disagreement response writer: Paste the point you expect them to dispute. Get short lines for pushback that keep the person while you hold your view.
How to use it
- Download the handoff pack. It's a zip with HANDOFF.md and every skill file this workflow uses.
- Give the folder to Claude (in Claude Code, or as files in a Claude Project) and say "Follow HANDOFF.md".
- Describe the person, the matter and what you want. It works step by step and saves each result.
- Have the conversation. Then note what they agreed to and what they still doubt, and run it again from the plan step if you need a second talk.
