What it does
Most headlines are written one at a time, and the first decent one gets used. The choice is made by whoever likes it most. Yet the reason you give a buyer, and the headline that carries it, usually matter more than anything else in an ad. This workflow starts with the reason to buy, chosen from a list and checked for fit and belief. It then writes at least twenty headlines in three types: those that offer the reader something, those that announce real news, and those that make the reader curious with a promise inside. Each headline is read alone, with the copy hidden, and scored on five rules. Dead, too-clever and meaningless lines are cut. The three that remain differ from each other, and a keyed plan sets how to test them with a winner rule. The method follows John Caples's Tested Advertising Methods.
