What it does
Judges of headlines usually read the copy first. Readers do not. A headline that only makes sense after the copy is a headline most people will never get past. When a group picks a favourite, it is often the clever one, and the clever one often loses when real replies are counted. This skill reads each headline alone. It writes the one sentence a stranger would give: what this offers, and to whom. It then scores five rules: does it offer the reader something, does it announce real news, does any curiosity carry a promise, is it hopeful, and is any quick-and-easy claim small enough to believe. It cuts dead, too-clever, meaningless and plain-fact lines even if they score well. The three it keeps come from different types or reasons, so a test can tell them apart.
You give it
- Your list of headlines, subject lines or hooks
- Who the reader is, in a line (optional)
- What a few outsiders said about the list (optional)
- Brand brain (optional)
You get
- For each line, what a stranger would think it offers
- A score on five rules, with a reason for each
- The lines cut outright and the rule each broke
- Three picks that differ, and how to run an outside read
Use it when
- You have a long list of headlines or subject lines and need to narrow it.
- A group is arguing over a favourite and nobody can say why.
- You suspect your best-liked headline says nothing to a stranger.
