What it does
Copy that talks about the product gets skimmed. Copy that speaks to something the reader already feels, such as dread about a bill or a long wish to be done with a problem, gets read. The trouble is guessing the feeling. Writers pick the one they like, or the one that is easy to sell, and the copy rings false. This skill works from the buyer outward. It lists what the buyer has lived through lately, writes the feeling behind each event with the proof for it, and learns from what has worked in the market. Then it checks which feeling your product can honestly answer. It scores each feeling for strength, names the strongest as the dominant emotion, and says why the next best lost.
You give it
- An angle library or a research file with its sources
- Your product facts (optional)
- A buyer persona (optional)
- Reviews, emails or call notes with dates (optional)
- Brand brain (optional)
- Customer words (optional)
You get
- The dominant emotion, in one sentence, with the events and words behind it
- A feeling-by-feeling table with a strength score
- The proposed theme, the runner-up and why it lost
- A persona update and a ranked angle list
Use it when
- You are about to write a sales page, email series or ad set and do not know which feeling to lead with.
- Your copy lists benefits but does not seem to land.
- You have lots of customer words and need to know which feeling runs through them.
