What it does
A headline that works on someone who already wants your product fails on someone who has never thought about the problem. A claim that was fresh three years ago may now be the one every rival makes. Most copy ignores both facts and just says what the writer likes. This skill starts from the want buyers already have, because copy can point a want at your product but cannot make one. It then places your buyers on a scale from ready to buy down to unaware, using the quotes and phrases you give it. It lists the claims in your market oldest first and tags each as a plain claim, a bigger claim, a new reason it works, a better version of that reason, or no claim at all. The latest kind buyers have met in numbers sets the stage. The brief that comes out lists what a headline may…
You give it
- Your product facts, including what it does for the buyer and its price
- Rival claims, pasted from their ads, pages or packs (optional)
- Customer words, such as reviews or support emails, word for word (optional)
- Customer words (optional)
- Competitors (optional)
You get
- The want your buyers already have, scored for urgency, staying power and size
- Where your buyers sit on the awareness scale, with evidence, a main place and a backup
- A claim timeline and the claim-fatigue stage it points to
- A MAY and MAY NOT list for the headline, and what would change the call
Use it when
- Your headline gets ignored or doubted, and you do not know if buyers know too little or have heard too much.
- You are entering a market where rivals all say the same thing.
- You want one clear read of your buyers before several people write copy.
