What it does
A name chosen first and a position chosen later rarely fit. A name that sounds like every rival leaves nothing to remember, and a position that tries to say everything says nothing. Both are slow and costly to change once you have a site and packaging. The steps decide the position first and let it shape the name. It lists every real alternative a shopper has and plots them on axes shoppers feel, to find a corner no one owns. Then it writes the position as one plain line and a short brief. The name generator writes hundreds of raw names without judging them, then cuts to a shortlist of ten to fifteen. The tester scores your best names and shows each one in five places. Last, it checks the name still works if you add a new range.
You give it
- What you sell, its price and who it is for
- Five to ten rivals shoppers really compare you with, with links to their sites or ads
- What shoppers say they care about, from reviews or support emails (optional)
- The countries and languages the name will be used in
- Any names you already like or dislike, and what a new range might include (optional)
- Customer words (optional)
You get
- A rival map and the one corner to own, with a claim, three proof actions and a 30-day check
- A one-line position and a short brief
- A shortlist of 10 to 15 names with reasons and a clearance to-do list
- Scores out of 100 for your best names, a keep, fix or drop call, and a stretch verdict for a new range
Use it when
- You are launching a store and have not settled the name or what you stand for.
- You are renaming because buyers cannot say what you stand for, or a rival leads your category.
- You have a name you like and want to test it, or check it will survive a bigger range.
Steps
- Competitor positioning map: Give it your product and rivals. Get an XY map and the one corner you can own.
- Positioning statement writer: Paste your product and your main rivals. Get one position to own, the rival weakness to use, and a one-line statement.
- Store name generator: Give it your brief and rivals. Get 200 raw names, a shortlist of 15 and a clearance list.
- Store name tester: Paste your shortlisted names. Get each scored out of 100 with a keep, fix or drop call.
- Brand expansion checker: Paste your brand and the new product. Get a stretch score out of 100 and a call on the name.
How to use it
- Download the handoff pack. It's a zip with HANDOFF.md and every skill file this workflow uses.
- Give the folder to Claude (in Claude Code, or as files in a Claude Project) and say "Follow HANDOFF.md".
- Give it at least five real alternatives. Include doing nothing if that is what shoppers do.
- Pick your two to five best names from the shortlist when it asks. Say all the countries you will sell in.
- Check domain and trademark availability yourself before you commit to a name.
