What it does
A brand that says four things is remembered for none. Strong brands own one simple word, and a word one rival already holds is almost impossible to take. Some words, like quality, belong to nobody because every brand claims them. This workflow maps which words rivals own and which are open or empty. It lists candidate words of four kinds, drops any that are taken, and tests the rest on four points: simple, wanted, true and opposed. It prefers a word opposite to the leader's. It then finds a flaw buyers already believe and writes lines that admit it and turn to your word, because buyers trust an admission before a boast. Last, it marks every product, customer group and message as feeding or blurring the word, and cuts the product line, narrows the target and sets a rule against changing the position at budget time. The ideas come from…
You give it
- Your main rivals, with their taglines or homepage lines
- Customer reviews that name you and your rivals (optional)
- Your product facts and proof (optional)
- Your brand facts and a list of what you sell and to whom (optional)
- Brand brain (optional)
- Customer words (optional)
You get
- The one word buyers link to each rival, and which words are taken, contested, empty or open
- One word to own, two backups and a four-test score for each
- Three admit-then-turn lines that set up the word
- A cut list, one target apart from the whole market, and a rule against drifting
Use it when
- You say too many things and buyers can't say what you stand for.
- Research says buyers want something and you suspect a rival already owns it.
- Your range and customer list keep growing and your message keeps changing.
