What it does
Ask a buyer why they chose you and you get a tidy reason that is often wrong. Ask what happened on the day, what was going on before it and what they stopped doing, and the real story comes out. It usually starts weeks before the purchase. This workflow runs in two halves. The first half plans a timeline interview with five to eight recent buyers, in seven stops from the day they bought back to the first thought and on to later use. You hold the interviews and keep exact words. The second half writes each interview as a short story, marks the four forces on each buyer (the pain of the situation and the pull of the new, the comfort of the old habit and the worry about the new), names what each person gave up and checks if they used the thing again. It groups matching stories,…
You give it
- What you sell and the kind of purchase you want to understand
- A list of people who bought in the last few months
- Product facts and customer words (optional)
- Your interview notes, for the second half
- Brand brain (optional)
You get
- A guide to a timeline interview, with probes and the questions to avoid
- Each buyer's story in six lines, tied to the notes
- The four forces for each buyer and what each one fired
- Clusters of matching stories with counts, and the surprises that do not fit
- A ranked list of what holds buyers back, two fixes for each and one small test with a keep rule
Use it when
- Many people look at your product and never switch.
- Customers say they like it, and you still do not know what made the ones who bought finally move.
- Your last interviews gave you praise and feature requests.
Steps
- Customer purchase interview guide: Name what you sell. Get a timeline interview script for five to eight recent buyers, from first thought to first use.
- Customer switching journey map: Paste interview notes from recent buyers. Get each buying story mapped, the four forces marked and the patterns across them.
- Customer switching barrier planner: Paste your switch story map. Get the habits and worries ranked, a fix for each and one small change to test first.
How to use it
- Download the handoff pack. It's a zip with HANDOFF.md and every skill file this workflow uses.
- Give the folder to Claude (in Claude Code, or as files in a Claude Project) and say "Follow HANDOFF.md".
- Describe what you sell and who bought lately. It writes the guide and stops.
- Hold five to eight interviews. Write the exact words with an ID and a date for each person.
- Bring the notes back and say "carry on from step 2".
