What it does
Most brands end up fighting rivals on the same few features, in the same words. Then the team writes a position statement that any rival could also sign, and the idea gets stuck because nobody was brought along. This workflow shows where nobody is strong before it writes a word. It grids your rivals against the features that decide the choice and marks the gaps. It then writes a sentence naming what only you do and swaps in each rival's name to see if they could say it too. Last, it plans the buy-in: a short story, a picture of life after the change, and a way to reach each person who can say yes. The ideas come from Marty Neumeier's book "The Brand Gap" and his later talks on zagging and buy-in.
You give it
- Your rivals, including those buyers might compare you with
- What buyers in your category value, in their words if you have them
- Your brand file, and what you love to do (optional)
- Customer reviews or quotes (optional)
- The people who can say yes or no to the idea, and what you know about each
- What you want them to do next
- Customer words (optional)
You get
- A grid of rivals against the features that decide the choice
- The gaps nobody serves well, with evidence, and where to stop fighting
- A small, cheap test of the best gap
- Two or three versions of an only-ness sentence, with a rival swap test for each
- A plan through the four stages of buy-in, a story that fits in under two minutes, a vision picture and a pitch line for each person
Use it when
- You need a brand position that rivals do not hold, and you can't see one.
- Your positioning line could fit three of your rivals and you want one only you can use.
- You have a good idea and need leaders or a team to back it.
