What it does
Hiring plans usually start from a wish list. Leaders ask for roles, finance asks for a number, and nobody can say why the list is in that order or what happens if two people leave. The budget gets cut and the plan stays the same. The steps start from the numbers. First it forecasts hires and exits from your history and states how far off the forecast could be. Then it turns your growth goals and that forecast into named roles in the order to hire them, with a monthly report for leaders. Last it prices each role into a budget by team and by month, with notes that explain the gaps to finance.
You give it
- Your headcount history, with hires and exits by month if you have them (optional)
- Your growth goals for the year
- Pay by role, or your best guess, and any budget limit
- Your starting headcount by team
You get
- A forecast of hires and exits, with the method and the range of error
- A hiring plan in priority order, with a monthly report for leaders
- A people-cost budget by team and by month
- Notes that explain the gaps to finance
Use it when
- You are planning next year's team and have no written hiring plan.
- Finance asks for a people budget and you only have a list of roles.
- You want to know how many hires you need just to stand still.
Steps
- Headcount forecast builder: Give it past headcount and goals. Get a hires and exits forecast, the method used and an error range.
- Headcount plan builder: Share your growth goals and budget. Get a role by role hiring plan with a priority order.
- People cost budget builder: Give it your headcount plan. Get a budget by team, a month-by-month view and notes to explain gaps to finance.
How to use it
- Download the handoff pack. It is a zip with HANDOFF.md and every skill file this workflow uses.
- Give the folder to Claude (in Claude Code, or as files in a Claude Project) and say "Follow HANDOFF.md".
- Paste your past headcount and your goals. A spreadsheet export works.
- Read the forecast first. If the exit numbers look wrong, correct them before the plan is built.
- Check the budget totals by hand against your pay figures before you share them.
