What it does

Asking buyers what they want and profiling who they are often leaves you with nothing to act on. A profile says who bought. It doesn't say what they were trying to get done, or what else they could have chosen. This workflow plans how to find the job behind the purchase. It sets up a day at the place of purchase, quick questions for buyers on their way out and interviews with people who switched to you in the last year. You hold the interviews and keep each person's words. Then it marks up those words, tags each phrase by how strong the reason is, counts separate people and ranks the reasons. The first half follows the milkshake study described by Clayton Christensen and his co-authors in "Know Your Customers' Jobs to Be Done".

Steps

  1. Customer job interview planner: Describe what you sell. Get a plan to watch buyers, ask them on the way out and interview people who switched.
  2. Customer buying reasons finder: Paste reviews or support emails. Get buying reasons in customers' exact words and a score out of 100.

How to use it

  1. Download the handoff pack. It's a zip with HANDOFF.md and every skill file this workflow uses.
  2. Give the folder to Claude (in Claude Code, or as files in a Claude Project) and say "Follow HANDOFF.md".
  3. Describe what you sell and when people buy it. It writes the plan and stops.
  4. Do the observation day and the interviews. Keep each person's own words with an ID and a date.
  5. Bring the answers back and say "carry on from step 2".
