What it does
A brand that tries to stand for everything stands for nothing. Buyers already hold a ladder of brands in their heads for each category, and a new name that blurs what you mean makes the whole brand weaker. Many launches also start with ads, which people trust less than a story someone else tells. This workflow picks one attribute to own and writes it as one plain line. It then tests whether your brand name can cover a new product or needs its own, and plans a launch that starts with a news angle and third-party stories before you spend on ads. The order comes from Al Ries and Jack Trout, who wrote "The Positioning Era Cometh" in 1972, and from Ries's later writing on branding and publicity.
You give it
- Your product and who it is for
- Your main rivals and what each is known for
- What you can truthfully claim (optional)
- Your brand file, or a few lines on what your brand stands for
- The new product you want to add, and what it is (optional)
- Product facts such as price, benefits and proof
You get
- One position to own, the weak spot of the leader you can use, and a one-line statement
- A short brief for your team
- A name check score out of 100 and a call to use the name, make a new one or skip
- What happens to your core product if the stretch fails
- A launch order with press first, a news angle, and the point of trust at which ads start
Use it when
- You are launching a product and need one clear idea to own against rivals.
- You want to add a product under your brand name and fear it will blur what the brand means.
- You have little ad money and want coverage first, so ads start when people already trust you.
Steps
- Positioning statement writer: Paste your product and your main rivals. Get one position to own, the rival weakness to use, and a one-line statement.
- Brand expansion checker: Paste your brand and the new product. Get a stretch score out of 100 and a call on the name.
- Publicity-first launch planner: Paste your new product and its category. Get a launch that starts with press coverage, then ads once people believe it.
How to use it
- Download the handoff pack. It's a zip with HANDOFF.md and every skill file this workflow uses.
- Give the folder to Claude (in Claude Code, or as files in a Claude Project) and say "Follow HANDOFF.md".
- Paste your product and rivals, plus your brand file if you have one. It works step by step and saves each result.
- Check the weak-spot claim against a real source before you use it anywhere public.
